During your pregnancy, you will be given the name of a Named Midwife. This is a midwife who has overall responsibility for co-ordinating your care throughout pregnancy, birth, and the early days after your baby is born.
Your named midwife will:
- be your main point of contact for your maternity care
- help to plan your care and meet your needs and preferences
- make sure you receive the right support at the right time
- support you to make informed choices about your pregnancy and birth
We aim for you to see your named midwife as often as possible. However, maternity care is a team approach, so you may see other midwives, doctors or specialists during your pregnancy. They will all share information to ensure your care is safe, consistent and personalised.
Having a named midwife will help you to:
- build trust with your care team
- feel supported, listened to and involved in decisions
- receive care that reflects your choices, culture and needs
