Having a baby should be an exciting and wonderful chapter in our lives and, whilst being pregnant and having a baby is safer now than ever before, sometimes pregnancy does not have the happy ending that we had planned and hoped for.

At Blackpool Teaching Hospitals, we understand the profound pain and heartache that comes with the death of a baby, whether through miscarriage, termination for medical reasons, stillbirth, or neonatal death.  Our dedicated swan bereavement team are here to offer support.

During your time in hospital, we have a private room with its own bathroom, kitchen and space for all the family.  The Maternity Swan Suite also has its own entrance, parking space and enclosed patio area, ensuring privacy during this incredibly difficult time.

We want you to know that you are not alone, and we are committed to walking alongside you every step of the way. Working closely with our obstetric and midwifery colleagues, we provide care and support tailored to your needs, ensuring you have the help you need for as long as you need it. Your grief is deeply acknowledged, and we are here to support you through this heartbreaking journey.

Maternity Bereavement Experience Measure (MBEM) - Learning from bereaved families' experiences.

Please accept our sincere condolences for the loss of your baby and our gratitude for taking the time to complete this questionnaire which we appreciate, may be difficult.

This questionnaire is for women and their partners who have experienced the loss of their baby/babies during pregnancy or shortly after birth. Please complete as much or as little of the form that you are able to. Some questions may not be relevant to your experience.  Please tick the relevant box for each question and write any comments you might have.

Give consideration to any aspects of the care you received before, during and after the birth of your baby, commenting on what mattered to you and your partner/family, what impacted on your experience and what could have been done differently to improve on the care you received. All information will remain anonymous and be used to learn from your experience and drive improvements in care.

If you would like to discuss any aspects of your care with a member of the Swan Maternity Bereavement Team at the hospital, please contact them on 01253 956877 or via email: bfwh.maternity.bereavement@nhs.net.
