Internal Medicine Training at Blackpool

We have 32 IMT training posts, covering IM1, 2 & 3 at Blackpool Teaching Hospitals, in a variety of Medical Specialties as well as Cardiology & ICM. You would be assigned your track by the TPD/IMT Support Team at Preston who run the Northwest IMT programme, dependant on your training needs.

For our IMT1,2 & 3 trainees, we work with Clinical Skills to run a monthly teaching programme, covering a variety of clinical skills which help you to develop your skills & get your clinical competencies signed off ready for ARCP’s. The Clinical Skills Programme includes a full day’s skills induction session at the start of the academic year focusing on the following: Lumbar puncture, Pleural Aspiration, Paracentesis, FB Nasogastric Tube Placement & central/IO Access.

The monthly afternoon sessions for the rest of the year cover the following: Chronic pain, US teaching, Cardiac emergencies, US peripheral access and LP, Human Factors, Pleural/ascitic drains and aspiration, DNACPR & Sepsis.

You also have the opportunity as IMT trainees to organise your own local teaching programme over lunchtime sessions, with support from the IMT Leads & Education Team.

We also support the IMT regional teaching programme by hosting 3 sessions per year at Blackpool, featuring lectures from Blackpool’s own subject matter specialists.

We have two dedicated Trust Leads with responsibility for IMT Trainees, Dr Rachel Argyle is the IMT lead for stage 1 & 2 training and Dr Andrew Jeffries is our Higher Medicine Lead responsible for stage 3 & higher onwards.

We have also recently recruited an IMT Clinical Educator at Blackpool, Dr Suzanne Wong. She is available to support trainees clinically to achieve their assessments needed to meet the curriculum requirements.
