Where you choose to have your baby is an important part of planning for your pregnancy. The best choice is the one that feels safest and most comfortable for you, based on your individual circumstances and preferences including any risks identified before and/or during your pregnancy.

You can talk through your options with your midwife at any point in pregnancy, and you can change your mind if your needs or feelings change.

Your options for giving birth are: 

A midwife comes to your home to support you in labour and birth.

Good for you if:

  • you want to be in a relaxed, familiar environment
  • you'd like a natural birth with fewer medical interventions
  • you have a healthy pregnancy with no complications

Things to consider: 

  • any risks identified before and/or during your pregnancy
  • medical equipment is limited at home
  • if you or baby need extra care, you may need to be transferred to hospital

The birth centre offers a home from home environment whilst being cared for by midwives on a one to one basis. The use of projectors, mood lighting and music creates a calm and relaxing environment whilst prioritising safety. The birth centre is co-located next to our consultant led unit. Birth partners are welcome to stay throughout your stay on the birth centre.

A hospital-based unit with midwives and doctors available if needed.

Good for you if:

  • you have pregnancy complications or a higher risk of needing medical help
  • you want access to doctors, epidurals, or more medical pain relief options

Things to consider:

  • the environment is more clinical and may involve more monitoring and intervention

It’s your choice, and you can switch your planned place of birth at any stage. Your midwife will support you to make the safest choice for you and your baby.
