The Screening team at Blackpool Teaching Hospital are responsible for the management and delivery of the 6 Antenatal and Newborn screening programmes within the Trust.

These include:

  • Sickle cell and Thalassemia screening in pregnancy
  • Infectious Diseases screening in pregnancy
  • Fetal Anomaly Screening
  • Newborn Examination screening
  • Newborn Bloodspot screening
  • Newborn Hearing Screening

 The team is made up of an Antenatal and Newborn Screening Lead, a Screening Midwife and a Failsafe Officer.

You will be offered a range of screening tests during pregnancy and after your baby is born. Your community midwife will discuss these with you and will refer you for additional care and support from the screening team if needed.

We offer BCG (Bacillus Calmette-Guerin) vaccination to protect your baby against tuberculosis (TB). If your baby is eligible, you will be referred for this following your baby’s birth and arrangements will then be made for your baby to attend a clinic for this following discharge from hospital.
