A caesarean birth (also known as C-section) is an operation to deliver your baby through a cut made in your tummy and womb.
The cut is usually made across your tummy, just below your bikini line.
A caesarean is a major operation that carries a number of risks, so it's usually only done if it's the safest option for you and your baby.
Around 1 in 4 pregnant women in the UK has a caesarean birth
We have an elective caesarean birth list every Monday, Wednesday and Friday between the hours of 8.45am-1.30pm. We also operate a 24/7 emergency service.
When you are booked for your elective C-Section, you will be:
- Given a date,
- The theatre team will contact you on the phone up to seven days before to do a pre-operative discussion, this will be to discuss all your medical, wellbeing, birth plan and to explain what will happen on the day.
- The second part of your pre-operative assessment will consist of an appointment to pathology lab to have your pre-operative bloods taken usually up to three days before your C-Section date.
We believe that every birth should be special and personal. You can make choices about your birth in theatre, and we will follow these as much as possible.
