It is estimated that one in three people born in the UK will develop cancer at some time in
their life. If this happens you may experience a range of powerful emotions such as fear,
anger, helplessness and depression. You may wonder how you and your family will
cope with the diagnosis, treatment and side-effects including your own emotional,
physical, spiritual, psychological and practical needs.
What is the role of the Gynaecology Specialist Nurse?
This is a nurse who specialises in the care and support of women who are diagnosed
with a gynaecological cancer and their families.
The nurse is a member of the healthcare team, working with other professionals
involved in your care. The service provides continuous information and support for
women and their families from diagnosis onwards.
The areas covered are:-
• Surgery
• Radiotherapy
• Chemotherapy
• Psychosexual Issues
• HRT and menopause information
• Lymphoedema
• Finance
• Support Agencies
• Local and National support groups
• Palliative Care
You will expect to meet your Specialist Nurse:
• At the out-patient Gynaecology clinic.
• At the out-patient Oncology clinic.
• On the ward if you are an in-patient.
If you or a member of your family would like any further information or wishes to talk
about what happens next, you can contact the Gynaecology Oncology Specialist Nurse
team by telephoning the hospital.
We also have a Gynaecology Support Worker who is a part of our team, who you may come
in contact with both in clinic, on the ward or speak to on the phone.
We hope you have understood everything that has been discussed with you. If you do not fully understand, or have any questions, please contact us. This can include your diagnosis,
treatment options, short and long term side effects of treatment.

health and wellbeing.
