Cardiac Day Case Nurses Station.jpg

The day case is a 20 bedded male and female ward, which admits patients for their procedures and cares for them post procedure until they are discharged home. The most common procedures include coronary angiogram, coronary angioplasty, permanent pacemakers, internal defibrillators and Cardioversions. As the ward usually caters for mainly elective patients, it is open 24hrs Monday through to Friday and closes at weekends. The ward consists of eight staff nurses all specialised in cardiology and four health care assistants. There is also one sister who is in charge of the ward five days a week.

Patients being admitted for morning procedures should arrive by 8.00am and those arriving for afternoon procedures should arrive for 10.30am.

The unit is located on ground floor of Lancashire Cardiac Centre across from the main lobby/café area.

Coronary Care Unit.jpgThe Coronary Care Unit is a seven bedded high dependency area caring for patients following an acute heart attack/heart rhythm disturbance/acute heart failure/primary angioplasty and other cardiac conditions. All patients are under the care of a consultant cardiologist.

We are a small team of enthusiastic and dedicated nurses and we aim to make your stay with us as comfortable as possible as being in a high dependency area can be stressful – there is a lot of monitoring equipment and noisy alarms, we will provide you and your family/close friends with support and guidance.

We have a small relatives room which can be used by family and friends.

Mealtimes for the patients are between 08:15 -09:00, 12:15 – 13:00 and 17:15-18:00.

Cardiac Intensive Care Unit.jpgCITU is a 20 bedded unit that provides intensive/high dependency care for patients who have undergone cardiac or thoracic surgery.

Almost all patients are admitted to the unit directly from theatre following their operation. Due to the nature of the surgery the patients require a high level of monitoring and support from our nursing team. All patients are nursed either on a one nurse to one patient ratio or a one nurse to two patients ratio.

Most patients are discharged to the cardiothoracic ward (38/39) within one to two days following their operation.

On a 24 hour basis there is a sister or charge nurse who is in charge of the day to day running of the unit. They have many years of experience in cardiothoracic surgery.

Visiting times on CITU is restricted to 2 – 4pm and 6 –7 pm. This is restricted to two relatives per bed. It is important that the patients get as much rest as possible. Next of kin are encouraged to telephone the unit to keep updated on the patient’s progress.

Ward 37 is a 39 bedded acute cardiology ward, split into three teams. The facilities are six four bedded bays with toilet and shower in each bay and the remaining beds are single rooms all with en-suite facilities. Ward 38 specialises in adult cardio-thoracic surgery, caring for people from all over the North West who require heart or lung surgery. Ward 38 itself is a busy 28 bedded ward.  Four of these beds are ‘high care’ beds for patients who require closer monitoring.

The ward is divided into six, four bedded bays , and four en-suite side rooms. Each bay has its own toilet and shower facilities and the ward has a disabled bathroom with easy access. The ward is mixed sex but each bay is single sex apart from the high care bay. We work hard in maintaining privacy and dignity in nursing our patients.

Each patient has bedside telephone and television facilities and they can be accessed by purchasing a card which are available on the corridor outside the ward. There are also two dayrooms available for quiet reading.

The ward operates a protected meal time policy and after lunch our patients are given a undisturbed rest period to aid recovery. Our patients are looked after by extensive specialised multi-disciplinary team which includes seven cardio-thoracic consultant surgeons and anaesthetists, physiotherapists and nurses. We are also able to refer to a wide range of other departments like the dieticians and occupational therapists, to ensure all our patients needs are met prior to discharge.
