The cardiac specialist nurses are involved in the diagnosis and treatment of patients suspected being in the process of having a heart attack.

Such patient may be eligible for either emergency angioplasty (primary PCI) or thrombolysis [see glossary] where either the clot in the heart artery is stented or dissolved depending on each patient situation.

The service currently employs five nurses, who are based in the cardiac centre We aim to provide cover seven days per week between the hours of 8am to 12 midnight, covering the following areas: accident and emergency, clinical decisions unit, medical directorate and other areas of the hospital as required.

The cardiac specialist nurses are also there for advice and education. We currently hold audit meetings to present our findings and figures and to discuss any interesting cases. We also teach on the ALERT course and also hold a three times annually training course at the clinical skills centre.
