The Cardiac Investigations Unit (CIU) provides a comprehensive range of non-invasive cardiac investigations to support your Consultant, GP, or other healthcare professional in diagnosing and managing your heart condition. 

Our team is made up primarily of highly skilled Cardiac Physiologists, who are healthcare scientists specialising in the diagnosis and treatment of heart conditions. We perform a wide range of diagnostic tests, including: 

  • Exercise Stress Testing 
  • Head-Up Tilt Table Testing 

  • Cardiopulmonary Exercise Testing (CPET) 

  • 12-Lead Electrocardiography (ECG) 

  • ECG and Blood Pressure Holter Monitoring and Analysis. 

We offer a full range of specialised cardiac ultrasound (echocardiography) services, including: 

  • Dobutamine and Exercise Stress Echocardiography 
  • Transoesophageal Echocardiography (TOE) 
  • Contrast Echocardiography 
  • Paediatric Echocardiography 
  • Adult Congenital Heart Disease Echocardiography 

Our experienced Cardiac Physiologists provide comprehensive follow-up services for patients with: 

  • All types of implanted pacemakers 
  • Implantable Cardioverter Defibrillators (ICDs) 
  • Cardiac Resynchronisation Therapy (CRT) devices 
  • Implantable Loop Recorders (ILRs). 

We also offer an excellent remote monitoring service for patients with cardiac implantable electronic devices, helping us deliver timely and efficient care. We work closely with our Heart Failure and Arrhythmia teams to ensure patients receive coordinated, high-quality treatment. 

Our Cardiac Physiologists also work within the Cardiac Catheter Laboratories, supporting the diagnosis and treatment of: 

  • Coronary artery disease (blocked arteries) 
  • Heart rhythm disorders (arrhythmias) 
  • Structural heart disease. 

They form part of the cardiology on-call service, helping to deliver emergency cardiac care across Lancashire. 

Our dedicated Assistant Cardiac Physiologists provide: 

  • ECG services for hospital wards and outpatient clinics 
  • Ambulatory monitor fitting services 
  • ECG patch monitoring services. 

As the major cardiac centre for Lancashire, we are proud of our training programme. You may be asked if you would be willing to allow a supervised trainee to assist with your investigation. Your participation helps support the development of future healthcare professionals. Add

  • Heart Failure Clinic. 

These services help us provide timely diagnosis, ongoing monitoring, and effective treatment for our patients. 

We receive diagnostic referrals from General Practices and healthcare providers across the region for a range of non-invasive cardiac investigations. To make healthcare more accessible, appointments may be offered at our Community Diagnostic Centres in Blackpool or Fleetwood, helping patients receive care closer to home or work. #

The Cardiac Investigation Unit is open Monday to Friday from 8am to 6pm. 

Please note: A receptionist may not be available during very early morning or late afternoon appointments. 

The Cardiac Investigations Unit is located on the ground floor of the Lancashire Cardiac Centre. Follow the main corridor and you will find the department on the right-hand side.
