ADAS is a consultant-led service run by biomedical scientists and medical laboratory assistants and provides INR testing and computer-assisted dosing advice to some 5000 registered patients on oral anticoagulant therapy in the local Blackpool, Fylde and Wyre area.

While warfarin is a very effective drug, it does need to be carefully monitored and it is important to keep the patient within their therapeutic range. Patients are monitored using the international normalised ratio (INR) level, which measures the delay in the clotting of the blood caused by warfarin. The team have a large amount of experience in dealing with patients on oral anti-coagulants.

We run weekly outreach clinics across the Blackpool, Fylde, and Wyre regions. Clinics operate at various sites from Monday to Friday, and patients will be directed to the most suitable location for their needs. Appointments can be booked or amended by calling the patient enquiry line on 01253 956719.

Patient INR blood results are available the same day, usually a patient is given their result and warfarin dosage advice at their appointment, taking no more than approximately 30 minutes.

ADAS provides education, counselling, and safety checks for patients starting Direct-acting Oral Anticoagulants (DOACs). We carry out follow-up blood tests and compliance checks at 4 weeks, and patients continue to be monitored for 12 months to identify any haemorrhagic or thromboembolic complications. We also manage transitions to prophylactic dosages before discharging patients back to their GP. Reports and blood test results are shared with the GP in accordance with laboratory turnaround protocols.

The service is based at Blackpool Victoria Hospital and can be accessed from the main hospital entrance, up the escalators and second turn on the left from the main corridor.
