Biopsies/samples have been taken and results will go direct to
      your hospital Consultants secretary.

A CLO test has been taken to test for the presence of
Helicobacter pylori bacteria. The results of this will be available to
you and your GP. Your GP will be asked to prescribe medication
      if necessary

      Biopsies have not been taken.

You have been given throat/nasal spray and are advised to wait
for 60 minutes for the spray to wear off before eating and
        drinking.

Then, try a small drink of water first. If you swallow this with no
problem then you can eat and drink as normal. If not, then leave it
another 30 minutes and try again.

You have been given a sedative for your procedure which may
       last up to 24 hours.

You are advised not to:
             • Drive any motorised vehicle
             • Work any machinery or work at a height
             • Consume alcohol
             • Sign any legal documents

Biopsy results will be communicated by the referring clinician at a later
date.

If a further appointment is needed for you to see your consultant it
will be sent to you.

The most common side effects from endoscopy procedures include:
           • Sore throat following gastroscopy
           • Slight bleeding following biopsies or polyp removal
           • Abdominal discomfort due to trapped air for all procedures

These should ease within 24 hours though if you have severe pain or
bleeding you must seek further medical help.

ERCP patients – please seek urgent medical advice should you
develop any severe constant abdominal pain or cramps, rectal
bleeding or black stools, dizziness, fever/temperature, vomiting or
you are unable to pass flatulence or stools.

If you have any concerns regarding the procedure you can contact
the Gastroenterology & Endoscopy Unit, see phone numbers on the
back page of this leaflet, Monday to Friday 7.45am - 6pm.

However, out of hours/during weekends and bank holidays
please contact Ward 2 on 01253 953402.

Alternatively you can contact NHS 111 for advice.
