Your First Visit
The anticoagulant department is responsible
for providing counselling and routine blood
tests for Patients commenced on one of the
following DOAC medications:
• Apixaban
• Edoxaban
• Rivaroxaban
• Dabigatran
After you have been referred to the
department by your Clinician, our team will
contact you by phone or post to arrange your
education session.
What to expect
The session lasts 30 – 45 minutes.
It is designed to give you important safety
information about your medication, including:
• How it works
• How it will be monitored
• What to watch out for
The session can either be:
• Face-to-face at one of our clinics.
• Over the telephone for your convenience.
Please bring a list of any current medication
to your first appointment.
Changing/Keeping your appointment
It is very important that you make every effort to
attend for your appointments but if you do need
to reschedule please ring on 01253 956719
between 09:30-11:45 or 12:45-16:30, Monday
to Friday. If your call is unanswered or you
telephone outside these hours, please leave a
message and we will ring you back as soon as
possible.
Future Clinic Visits
After your first clinic visit, we will arrange
regular follow-up appointments to ensure your
treatment remains safe and effective.
What Happens at Follow-Up?
• Blood samples will be taken to check for signs of bleeding/anaemia, in addition to
kidney and liver function.
• We will measure your body weight.
• We will ask you some questions related to your treatment.
• Test results will be sent directly to your GP
• Further appointments will be scheduled
every 1–4 months, dependent upon your
blood test results.
Why Are These Visits Important?
They allow our team to:
• Monitor your DOAC therapy according to current guidelines.
• Discuss any issues or side effects that you may be experiencing.
• Share important updates with your GP.
How to Find Us
The Anticoagulant Dosing and Advisory
Service (ADAS) runs two community
clinics throughout the week for Direct Oral
Anticoagulant (DOAC) monitoring at the
following locations:
1. South Shore Primary Care Centre
Address:
575 Lytham Rd, Blackpool, FY4 1TJ
Clinic Location:
• Enter through the main entrance.
• Turn left past the second lift.
• Turn left down the corridor just
after the toilets into the Outpatients
department.
• Ring the bell and take a seat.
2. Moor Park Health Centre
Address:
Bristol Ave, Blackpool, FY2 0JG
Clinic Location:
• Enter the main building.
• The ADAS Clinic is located to the
right of the central staircase, just past
Outpatients Reception.
• Ring the bell and take a seat.
What to do in the event of UNUSUAL bleeding and/or bruising
Rarely, some patients may experience
unusual bleeding and/or bruising and should
this occur you must contact your GP or 111
for medical advice. If your symptoms are
severe you are advised to attend A&E as
soon as possible.
Please seek urgent medical advice
from 111/999 if you experience any of the
following:
• Red/blood in urine
• Vaginal bleeding (Post-menopausal/ Unexplained)
• Black stools / Blood in poo
• Nose bleeding lasting more than 10 minutes. (If on home oxygen therapy
contact home oxygen team on 01253 956972)
• Vomiting / Coughing up blood
• Bleeding gums
• Blood shot eye(s)
• Bleeding from a severe cut that will not stop or slow down
• New / Unexplained / Significant bruising
• Severe headaches, fits or seizures, changes to eyesight
• Sudden severe back pain
