Celebrating 90 years of Blackpool Victoria Hospital

Today Blackpool Victoria Hospital is marking 90 years since the first patient arrived at Blackpool Victoria Hospital's current location on Whinney Heys Road. 

Formally known as Blackpool Infirmary and based on Whitegate Drive, Blackpool Victoria Hospital was given the new name with Queen Victoria's consent in 1898.

Work on a new replacement for the hospital began in 1932 and in 1933 Lord Derby laid the foundation stone for the new hospital. 

1936 was also the year of three kings with the death of King George V, the brief reign of Edward VIII before his abdication when the crown passed to George VI. 

Over the last 90 years the Trust has marked many important milestones, including:

• The launch of the NHS in 1948
• The opening of a maternity unit in 1975
• Clifton Hospital opening in 1988
• Being award teaching hospitals status in 2010.
