I am thConrad Beacham.jpge Head of Department and have worked at Blackpool Victoria Hospital since 1997. I examine both paediatric and adult patients in a variety of clinics within the hospital. I have a paediatric clinic in Lytham on a Friday.

I joineGina Orthoptics Meet the Team.pngd the Orthoptic Department at Blackpool Victoria Hospital in February 2024 as an Ophthalmic Technician. In this role, I perform diagnostic testing, including measuring patients' peripheral vision through Visual Fields testing. I also support the department with various daily administrative tasks. 

I completed my optical training in 2015 and have worked for both national and independent opticians. My experience includes performing patient pre-screening for Intra-Ocular Pressures, Visual Fields, and Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT), as well as dispensing spectacles, making adjustments to previously dispensed spectacles, and carrying out basic repairs.

I thoroughly enjoy my current role in the Outpatients Department, where I welcome patients, put them at ease during their appointments for diagnostic testing, and deliver high-quality patient care.

My current role includes seeing a mix of adults in Blackpool Victoria Hospital and children in community clinics in and around Blackpool, Thornton and Fleetwood.

To further my professional development, I have completed the BIOS clinical tutors' course, so I get the chance to teach and encourage future generations of orthoptists.

As an Advanced Orthoptist at Blackpool Teaching Hospitals, I hold a leadership role in the Orthoptic department, focusing on the development and delivery of high-quality adult services. I am deeply committed to a patient-centered approach, striving to ensure every patient feels listened to and understood. I aim to take a holistic view, considering all aspects of a patient's health to provide the most effective and supportive care.

I play a vital role in training and mentoring other healthcare professionals, ensuring our team maintains the highest standards of clinical practice. Additionally, I contribute significantly to the management and organisation of the Orthoptic service. Ultimately, I am dedicated to enhancing the overall effectiveness and accessibility of our Orthoptic services, always prioritising the individual needs of the patients we serve.

I am an orthoptist and I graduated from the University of Liverpool in July 2017. I joined the team at Blackpool Teaching Hospitals in July 2018. I assess both adults and children in clinics at the hospital and in the community. I am currently the vision screening lead for the Lancashire Vision Screening Service and the Blackpool School Screening Service. Both services involve the delivery of eye tests for children aged four to five years at school. I am responsible for organising, auditing and managing both services.

I have Katherine Sullivan.jpgworked as an Orthoptist at Blackpool Teaching Hospitals since 2019. I am the Paediatric Orthoptist Lead and Special Educational Needs Orthoptist Lead. My role involves me assessing paediatric patients in joint paediatric Ophthalmology and paediatric Optometry clinics at the Women's and Children's Unit, as well as in Orthoptist only community clinics.

I also provide a visual screening service for children with Special Educational Needs, which involves me organising and carrying out reception age visual screening for the eligible children in the Special Schools and mainstream SEN Units in the Blackpool area

I am thIqra Altaf.jpge BIOS trade union representative for Blackpool and have worked as a full-time orthoptist for Blackpool since February 2020. My role includes assessing a variety of both paediatric and adult patients in community and at the hospital.

I work with multiple healthcare professionals such as optometrists in my orthoptic-optometrist joint clinics on Mondays and with the consultant ophthalmologist seeing paediatric patients in the Woman and Children's unit as well as adult patients in the adult ocular motility clinics every month. As well as this, I also assess paediatric patients in South Shore Primary Care Centre every Thursday.

I will be assessing stroke patients both in the outpatient's department and on the stroke ward and will be carrying out visual screening for SEN patients in special schools. I will be undergoing the BIOS clinical tutor training programme to help undergraduate orthoptic students whilst on placement at Blackpool hospital.

My role as an Ophthalmic Technician involves undertaking the clinical testing of visual fields, using the Humphrey Visual Field Analyser.  I also help with numerous administrative duties within the Department.

I completed the BIOS (British Irish Orthoptic Society) Vision Screening Training Programme and achieved the standards of competency in Vision Screening for children aged four to five years.  I visit schools in the Lancashire area and perform vision screening tests for Reception children.

I have Rebecca Orthoptics Meet the Team.pngworked as an orthoptist since graduating in 2023. I worked at Bolton Hospital for 1 year prior to starting at Blackpool hospital in November 2024. My previous role I was working as an Ophthalmic technician at Aintree whilst at Liverpool University studying orthoptics.

My current roles include seeing adult patients at Blackpool Victoria Hospital both in an outpatient setting or assessing patients on the stroke ward. I see paediatric patients in the community, and this can be an orthoptic assessment or a joint optometry clinic. 

I have now completed my BIOS Clinical tutors course to help support and teach students training in orthoptics or other health care professionals.

This involves assessing the health and refractive state of children's eyes. The rest of the week I work in independent practice seeing a wide range of patients.

Victoria Ellison.jpegI  joined the Orthoptic Team in December 2025.  My role is as an Ophthalmic Technician which includes undertaking visual field testing and assisting with administrative tasks within the Orthoptic Dept.  I have worked at BVH since April 2013.

Michaela Sherlock.jpegI have worked as an Orthoptist since graduating in 2019. I joined the orthoptic department at Blackpool Victoria in 2026 as an Advanced Orthoptist Stroke Lead, after working at Lancashire Teaching Hospitals and Mersey and West Lancashire Teaching Hospitals. I have recently completed my PhD at the University of Liverpool, evaluating static and kinetic perimetry practice in neuro-ophthalmology.  

My role as stroke lead is managing the visual screening of stroke survivors and ensuring continuation of care in the community if a visual impairment is detected. I work closely with other members of the stroke orthoptic team and the stroke multidisciplinary team to provide patient-centred care. 

I have Dale Martin orthoptics.jpegworked as an Orthoptist since graduating from the University of Liverpool in 2013.  After 6 years working as an Orthoptist on the Island of Guernsey, I first joined the Orthoptics team at Blackpool Victoria Hospital in 2020 into 2021. After a career break returned to the Blackpool orthoptics team at the start of 2025.  

I enjoy working with a variety of patients such as Paediatric, SEN and Adult stroke patients. This includes general paediatric outpatient clinics, assessment of stroke patients on the ward or as an outpatient and a joint paediatric clinic with an optometrist. 

I can be based at Blackpool Victoria hospital or community clinics in Fleetwood and South Shore.

David - Orthoptic meet the team optometrist.jpegI am an optometrist and have worked alongside the orthoptic team at Blackpool Victoria since 2016. In my role, I assess whether glasses may help a child's eyesight and their development as well as looking at aspects of the health of their eyes. I am usually based a Blackpool Victoria Hospital on a Tuesday and work in community practice in my time outside of the trust.
