NHS England and the Department of Health and Social Care (DHSC) have announced that Blackpool Teaching Hospitals is one of 14 NHS trusts included in a new national maternity and neonatal investigation.

These trusts will be looked at under a rapid, independent, national investigation first announced by the Government in June 2025.

Trusts have been chosen based on a range of factors including:

  • Variation in case mix
  • Trust type
  • Geographic coverage
  • Provision of care to individuals from diverse backgrounds
  • Family feedback.

Blackpool Teaching Hospitals welcomes the national focus on learning and improvement in maternity services and believes the safety of mothers and babies is vitally important.

A CQC inspection in March 2025 found the safety of our maternity services had improved and the Trust’s teams have worked tirelessly to strengthen care, recruit and support staff and implement improvements.

Maggie Oldham, Chief Executive at Blackpool Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, added: “We know there is more work to do and look forward to working with the national team, learning from others, and sharing how we’ve made progress.

“We are determined to continue improving our maternity services and ensuring local families have confidence in the care we provide.”
