Discharge Advice

Following Balloon Aortic Valvuloplasy (BAV) Balloon Aortic Valvuloplasty is a procedure which is sometimes used (in patients with Severe Aortic Stenosis or narrowing of the heart valve) to see if the patient gets an improvement in symptoms following the stretching of the valve.

You will be seen in the Cardiology clinic usually at around 6-8 weeks post procedure to assess your progress and discuss any possible further treatment.

Recovery

Time taken to recover will vary from patient to patient, on average it will take about two weeks.

Groin

During the procedure tubes will have been inserted into your groin, these will then be removed after the procedure, there may be some bruising. It is important to check for any swelling, tenderness, bleeding or severe pain. If this should occur then contact your GP or attend your local hospital. If there is any pain, discolouration or coldness in the leg or foot then either contact your own GP or the ward from which you were discharged.

In the unlikely event of any severe bleeding from your groin – lie down and apply firm pressure over the wound and seek immediate medical advice.

A tiny, pea-sized lump at the side of the incision is normal. Mild discomfort in the area can be managed by taking simple analgesia such as paracetamol, in line with the manufacturer’s instructions. Avoid doing any heavy lifting for a week.

Flying

Please seek advice from your Consultant.

Driving

No driving for two weeks. If you are symptomatic with your aortic valve disease then please refer to the DVLA guidelines which state driving is banned if you are symptomatic.

Emotions

If you experience any problems emotionally post-procedure it is important that you mention these to your GP so that they can monitor this.

Exercise

Gradual re-introduction of activity – depending on your symptoms and general health.

As above you will receive an appointment in the post for clinic review. If you have any queries or problems please do not hesitate to contact the ward from which you were discharged.
